According to officials from the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, the incident occurred last Friday when the hiker picked up the venomous snake, resulting in a bite to his hand. Witnesses reported seeing the hiker handle the snake.
Matthew Griffith, of the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, stated that the hiker likely suffered an allergic reaction to the venom, although the exact cause of death has not been officially released. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, approximately half a mile from the trailhead, and performed CPR on the hiker. However, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.Griffith expressed his condolences to the hiker's family and reminded the public of the importance of safety precautions while engaging in outdoor activities. He emphasized the need to carry a first-aid kit, be aware of wildlife, and avoid direct contact with snakes.
