Hiker dies after lightning strike on east peak of American Fork Twin Peaks

A hiker was struck by lightning and died while hiking in the Twin Peaks area on Saturday, Salt Lake County officials said. Search-and-rescue crews recovered the hiker's body.

A hiker died on Saturday after being struck by lightning while hiking near American Fork Twin Peaks in Little Cottonwood Canyon. ALTA — A person struck by lightning died while they were hiking with another person in the American Fork Twin Peaks area near Little Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Salt Lake County Search and Rescue team dispatched a helicopter and quickly located the pair. Stormy conditions delayed search-and-rescue teams, who reached them soon after the storm cleared. The person struck by lightning did not survive. The sheriff's office credited Snowbird Ski Patrol with safely escorting the person's hiking partner off the mountain.
