This roughly 2-mile loop takes hikers along four of the park's trails: the Father Junipero Serra Trail, the Climbers Loop, Grinding Rocks Trail and the Visitor Center Loop
Mission Trails Regional Park is home to quintessential chaparral vegetation, the San Diego River and a popular rock climbing crag — all of which can be explored on this moderately challenging hike. The roughly 2-mile loop takes hikers along four of the park's trails: the Father Junipero Serra Trail, the Climbers Loop, Grinding Rocks Trail and the Visitor Center Loop.
The route immediately starts to climb, though there are wooden stairs and switchbacks that help the trek feel a little easier. Hikers who have a fear of heights may not enjoy this route, since the trail is steep and ascends quickly. Around 0.7 miles, hikers must step up and over larger rocks, which can feel more like rock scrambling than hiking. Regardless of hiking skill level, I recommend wearing shoes with good traction.
