A TriMet bus driver is hailed as a hero after he calmly and skillfully navigated a hijacking situation, allowing passengers to safely escape and ultimately leading to the suspect's arrest.
On Wednesday, January 30, 2025, Portland police used tear gas to apprehend a man accused of hijacking a TriMet bus. The incident unfolded in a dramatic fashion as heavily armed officers surrounded the transit vehicle. According to court documents, the driver heard gunshots and, upon opening the door, was confronted by Hosea Chambers, who brandished a firearm. The quick-thinking driver, hailed as a hero, opened the back door, allowing passengers to safely evacuate.
Chambers demanded the driver navigate through the city, repeatedly racking and re-racking the firearm while counting down from 3, 2, 1, and pressing it against his own head. Chambers miraculously handed the gun to the driver, who then threw it out the window before escaping. The driver's actions were praised by TriMet spokesperson Tia York, who highlighted the de-escalation training provided to all TriMet operators. During Chambers' court appearance on Thursday, he was ordered to remain in jail without bail, facing over a dozen charges including kidnapping and robbery. TriMet emphasized its efforts to address community issues before they impact its transit system. The agency employs nearly 500 personnel dedicated to safety and security, including a 70-member safety response team comprised of individuals with lived experience who connect with those experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges, providing resources and support to mitigate potential issues before they escalate.
