The highway patrol says it took a longer time than hoped to issue an AMBER Alert for two baby twin boys abducted from Short North on Monday night.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it took a longer time than normal to issue an AMBER Alert for two baby twin boys abducted from the Short North on Monday night, although slow communication from Columbus Police due to a newly purchased car may have also contributed to the delay.
Columbus police Deputy Chief Smith Weir also addressed criticism of the delay in the AMBER Alert delay, saying officers had to do a lot of"leg work" to overcome obstacles in a short period of time. Among other things, he said, they had to wake up the owners of a car dealership to get the Vehicle Identification Number and temporary license plate number for Barnett's Honda to provide to the state Highway Patrol.
"It had a torn, temporary tag was my understanding,” said Raines, so the watch desk had to rely on other information, such as the fact that it was missing a front bumper. “ we were contacted by Columbus Police about doing an amber alert in adjacent states around Ohio. ... Because there was no belief on of the family or the Columbus Police Department that they would be traveling to one of those states … each of those states declined to do an AMBER Alert,” Raines said.
