Hanratty stands damaged along Interstate 78 in Union County after a crash damaged the monument on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.A driver was under the influence when he crashed into a roadside monument honoring a New Jersey state trooper who died during a traffic in the early 1990s, according to police.

New Jersey State Police said a 38-year old man from Berkley Heights crashed into the memorial on Interstate 78 around 2 p.m. Aug. 31. He was treated on scene by firefighters. While investigating the crash, troopers found a controlled dangerous substance inside the vehicle, police said. He was brought to a hospital, arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of a CDS and being criminally under the influence. Thomas J. Hanratty, a New Jersey state trooper from Elizabeth, was killed in 1992 when he was struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on Route 78. The Elmora Troopers, a little team from Elizabeth, honor him with team's name as they compete in Little League World Series. The memorial was dedicated to mark the site where Trooper Thomas J. Hanratty died on April 2, 1992, in Summit, Union County.showed damage to a metal upside-down triangle shaped as the New Jersey State Police logo and a sign reading “4971 Gone but Never Forgotten.” Hanratty, 24, was at the same spot, at milepost 46.8, when a car plowed into him, sending him to hospital where he later was pronounced dead.
