The vehicle struck a concrete pillar at the interchange of Highway 101 and Highway 37, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victims were Donald Mardon Rosenthal, 84, and Elsie Maxwell Rosenthal, 70, the Marin County coroner’s office said. The crash happened at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday at the northbound Highway 101 ramp to eastbound Highway 37, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The couple’s Toyota Highlander struck a concrete pillar off the road, CHP Officer Arthur Tellez said.Ms. Rosenthal, who also used the name Elsie Fletcher-Rosenthal, was a former board member of the Marin Humane Society in Novato. She had been a volunteer there for 14 years and most recently served on its finance committee, said Nancy McKenney, the chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization.“Elsie had a big, soft heart for animals, especially dogs, and she donated to several animal rescue groups as well as was a major donor at Marin Humane,” McKenney said.
