Local health experts say virus cases and hospitalizations likely will see a bump following Fourth of July celebrations.
“Depending on people’s behavior and actions with the holiday weekend, it could translate into how long this goes and how high the peak is,” said Dr. James Cutrell, associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern. The numbers pale in comparison to the more-than-4,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the area during the omicron variant’s peak in January.North Texas case numbers, which have been climbing for weeks, are likely much higher than reported as more people test for the virus at home or forego testing altogether. Dallas County remains at the lowest COVID-19 risk level.
Holiday celebrations offer the perfect environment for the virus to spread, especially when people are gathering indoors or traveling. And while the current dominant variants won’t cause severe problems for most people, some groups are still at risk for hospitalization, including people who are older, immunocompromised or unvaccinated.
