San Antonio aims to crack down on short-term rentals that aren’t paying taxes But hiking up the fees has to be done carefully, staffers from the city attorney’s office noted, because fees cannot surpass the amount the city spends to regulate short-term rentals. City staff plans to crunch numbers in the coming weeks to determine whether the proposed hikes would break that rule.
San Marcos backtracks on short-term rental limits in some neighborhoods The city’s finance department collects hotel occupancy tax at a rate of 9% for the city. Bexar County's rate is 1.75%. Operators pay another 6% to the state of Texas. AirBnB and VRBO — which make up 90% of local short-term rental bookings — have agreed to work with San Antonio to ensure everyone on their sites pay their taxes. They will remove postings from rentals that the city notes are operating without a permit.
