A runaway barge by the Seattle waterfront initiated an evacuation at some buildings along the waterfront Thursday afternoon.
"Crews responded to reports of an unattended barge that struck Pier 66," said Seattle Fire Department Public Information Officer David Cuerpo. "Firefighters evacuated the impacted buildings as a safety precaution."
KOMO News has asked which buildings were impacted. A spokesperson for the Seattle Aquarium said their building was not evacuated., tugboats appeared to come to the rescue and pin the barge against a dock. SFD confirmed a tugboat secured the barge to the nearby docks.tried to push aside the barge before the tugboat wrangled it, but SFD has not yet confirmed.
The barge overwhelmed the first boat attempting to halt the barge, said onlooker Bryant Hill in an email to KOMO News.lists wind speeds in the Seattle harbor at 17 knots Wednesday afternoon, equivalent to nearly 20 mph.. SFD did not comment on the damage to the dock used to capture the barge. The wind was severe enough to also close the Woodland Park Zoo early, according to a press release. The zoo said all animals are safe and the closure is a precautionary measure.
