Hill Junior High in Dallas has introduced a cutting-edge program called 'Securly,' which serves as a high-tech hall pass system. Principal Candice Ruiz emphasized the importance of school safety, stating, "School safety is a priority." The 'Securly' system assigns students a designated bathroom and sets a timer for their trips. Eighth-grader Isabella Maldonado explained the previous issues, saying, "You would see a lot of people in the hallways, roaming around, making loud noises, and distracting the classrooms." Students request hall passes online by selecting their teacher's name and the location they intend to visit, such as the bathroom, nurse's office, or library. Teachers then approve the request, initiating a countdown. If a student exceeds the 10-minute limit, screens turn yellow, prompting teachers or administrators to check on them. Principal Ruiz noted, "Now I know where all our students are... our students don't have their cell phones, they can't meet up in the restroom, all these systems are making sure our focus is always on kids learning." Maldonado added that the system enhances safety during drills or evacuations, as administrators can track students' locations. In addition to the 'Securly' system, the school has implemented other safety measures. Students must lock their phones in Yondr pouches, undergo bag searches, pass through metal detectors, and occasionally be wanded upon entering the school. Despite these precautions, some students have attempted to bypass the locked pouches. Ruiz pointed out, "You can see this one has been vandalized. I do pick them up." Ruiz concluded, "Having Yondr and having e-hall pass has helped keep our school safe, especially since our kids don't have cell phones; it helps us keep track of where they are at."
