The Owls used big plays to take their lead, getting three touchdown passes from quarterback Joseph Clay and a 71-yard punt return for another score from Willie Gaskin in the game’s first 15 minutes. The Owls’ early surge was aided by two lost fumbles and a bad punt snap by Burbank . The Bulldogs closed to within 34-21 late in the third quarter and had the ball in the red zone in the final period, but a turnover on downs ended Burbank’s comeback hopes.Highlands started the game by recovering an onside kick and scored two plays later on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Clay to Khenedy Jackson to go up 7-0 just 45 seconds into the first quarter.
Clay also connected with DeAnthony Johnson and Sebastian Leyva for touchdowns in the first half as he went 16 for 19 for 243 yards and three scores in the first two quarters. Down 34-7 early in the third period, Burbank got a 2-yard touchdown run from Matthew Cortez and a 24-yard pass from Keven Hernandez to Rene Espinoza to close the gap, but Highlands got a stop and then a 38-yard touchdown pass from Clay to Johnson to seal the win for the Owls.Highlands climbed above .500 in district play and put itself squarely in the hunt for a playoff spot.
