Selena Soto and Morgan Gillory standing together in High Potential Season 2

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for High Potential Season 2 Episode 2.High Potential Season 2 is only two episodes in so far, but it's already off to a strong start. The two-episode arc that kicked off the Season 2 premiere saw the return of the Game Maker , the clever serial abducter and almost-killer from the Season 1 finale who had been playing dangerous games with the LAPD to try to get Morgan's attention.

Despite all odds, Morgan and her team were able to defeat him and save everyone involved in the process. Now that the Game Maker has been taken down, at least for now, the show is all set up to return to its usual case-of-the-week structure next week. The first season of High Potential leaned into the classic crime procedural model, in which each episode saw Morgan and the rest of the LAPD's Major Crimes unit solving a murder or missing person's case. This included cases like a veterinarian who'd been murdered with poisoned soap, a CEO who was killed at her launch party with her own trophy, and a decades-old cold case where one member of a wealthy family was killed when they were the only ones at their mansion. High Potential's formula works very well, but going into the rest of its second season, the series should incorporate more serialized storylines. 'High Potential' Season 2 Should Dive More Into Everyone's Lives Outside of Work At this point in High Potential, most of the show has been dedicated to Morgan's career as a consultant for the LAPD Major Crimes unit, and her time solving crimes alongside the rest of the team. Outside of work, High Potential gives a lot of focus to Morgan's three children and her ex, Ludo , as well as the overarching storyline of her search for her missing ex, Roman Sinquerra. The Roman storyline is High Potential's main serialized storyline, and it was introduced all the way back in the show's very first episode. Even though it's been revealed that Roman is alive and in hiding after working as an informant for the FBI, the show has yet to introduce him or to explain the full extent of what happened to him and where he's been all this time. The Roman arc is one of High Potential's best, but it doesn't yet have many serialized storylines outside of this. Morgan's personal life continues to play a major role in nearly every episode of the show, but the other characters haven't gotten those same types of storylines yet. Karadec's love life has been hinted at a bit, particularly in relation to his potential slow-burn romance with Morgan, but his most interesting personal storyline is related to the falling out that he had with his former partner, Ronnie . The episode that focused on Karadec and Ronnie's complicated past was definitely one of the best glimpses so far into Karadec's character, and it would be great to see more moments for him like that outside of the usual cases that he solves with Morgan. Selena and Oz have both each had one personal storyline related to work, when Selena reopened an old case from earlier in her career, and when Oz was abducted by the Game Maker. Daphne , meanwhile, hasn't yet had enough focus outside of the cases, and High Potential should definitely divvy the B-Plots among the rest of its ensemble cast more this season. 'High Potential' Season 2 Should Have More Recurring Villains A crime procedural staple is a recurring villain, someone evil and clever who continues to wreak havoc on the main characters throughout the series. The Rookie had this with Rosalind Dyer even after she went to prison, and How to Get Away With Murder had this with characters like Sam Keating and Emily Sinclair . The Game Maker has only been in three episodes of High Potential so far, but he already has so much potential as a villain. He is motivated by both revenge and a desire to play games, and he's much more interested in the game than the end result of actually killing someone. Even though he's been arrested, the Game Maker could easily return to try to manipulate Morgan and the rest of her team from prison, and the show should also consider introducing more villains like him. Another potential recurring villain for High Potential is yet to be introduced, but has already been set up by the show as early as Season 1. It's already been revealed that the FBI agent that Roman was working with was killed around the time that he went missing, and that Roman has been hiding from someone very powerful who works in law enforcement. Whoever sent Roman into hiding could be a really compelling and frightening villain for the show going forward, particularly if it's someone whom we've already met through Morgan's work. This could make for both a shocking reveal and some really intense storylines if this person continues to recur on the show. High Potential is still early on in its run, but it has all the makings to become a long-running crime procedural, and the first step from here would be to include more ongoing storylines. New episodes of High Potential air Tuesdays at 10:00 P.M. EST on ABC, and are available to stream on Hulu the next day. 67 9.7/10 High Potential 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Drama Release Date September 17, 2024 Network ABC 9 Images Close Cast See All
