Elevated lead levels are believed to be tied to an indoor shooting range at the Jeffrey Piccola Law Enforcement Training Complex.

HACC has closed its Jeffrey Piccola Law Enforcement Training Complex in the wake of high lead readings related to the building's indoor firing range.HACC has closed its main law enforcement training facility “until further notice” after the discovery of high levels of lead in blood tests from some instructors who worked at the indoor firing range there.

The Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Training Complex - home base for a police academy program that produces several classes of graduates certified to work for municipal or county police forces throughout Pennsylvania - closed on Sept. 19. HACC said it is currently completing more thorough air testing through the entire Piccola building, which includes classrooms and offices in addition to the range, plus any needed modifications or upgrades to air flow systems.

University officials did not immediately respond to PennLive’s requests for more information late Monday, so it was impossible to say how long of an exposure to the building would trigger cause for a test, or how many people would be in that pool. That dust can enter a person’s bloodstream from the air, or by ingestion through transfer from hands, surfaces and clothing to food. Once in the bloodstream, lead can damage various organs and cause health problems.
