A new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that taking high doses of ADHD medications, particularly amphetamines like Adderall and Vyvanse, is associated with more than five times the risk of developing psychosis or mania.

Taking a high dose of ADHD drugs is linked to more than five times greater risk of developing psychosis or mania, according to a new study published Thursday in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The research is among the first to find a relationship between escalating doses of the drugs — amphetamines, in particular — and a greater likelihood of psychotic symptoms. The drugs include Adderall, Vyvanse and generic amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine.

“We’ve seen this a lot,” Moran said. “We are seeing college students coming in being prescribed stimulants who didn’t have much of a psychiatric history developing new onset psychosis.” In the new study, Moran and her colleagues reviewed electronic health records from Mass General Brigham from 2005 through 2019, focusing on teens and adults ages 16 to 35 — the typical age range for the onset of psychosis or schizophrenia.
