The campsites at Kirby Cove in the Marin Headlands usually book “within seconds” and come with a recommendation to bring earplugs.
, elbowing picture-happy tourists just off a mega bus and bravely facing stiff wind gusts for a few chilly moments with the world’s most iconic span.
“It’s pretty incredible,” Cordelia Vargas, Golden Gate National Recreation Area park guide, told SFGATE in a phone interview. “It’s a very serene, beautiful area.”If you’re not familiar with this part of the Marin Headlands, take Highway 101 and exit at Alexander Avenue coming from both the north and south, then follow signs for the Golden Gate Bridge through the Baker-Barry Tunnel until you’ve landed on Conzelman Road.
You’ll run into the Battery Wagner Trail on the way down. This concrete battery, like Battery Kirby further down and along the bluffs in the Marin Headlands, has long since been abandoned by the U.S. military presence that dominated this area decades ago. I passed a few hikers but had the trail to myself for the most part, which is exactly how hiking should be.
“My favorite aspect of the view is, of course, it’s lovely to stand on the beach and look up at the bridge, but what I love is standing in the middle of the campground with the tall trees,” Vargas said. “You can look through the tall trees and see the top of the Golden Gate Bridge.”
