The popular playwright-pianist-performer hasn't done a major public performance in San Diego since before the pandemic
It’s been a long time since San Diego theater audiences have seen Hershey Felder onstage.
When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the popular performer and pianist known for his 15 composer-themed musical solo plays stopped touring. Instead, he spent much of the past three years producing streaming versions of his plays from his home in Florence, Italy. Except for a one-night visit early last year for a Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival fundraiser, Felder hasn’t been back to San Diego until now.On Saturday, he’ll present two performances on the “farewell tour” of his solo play with music “George Gershwin Alone” at the Balboa Theatre.
Felder premiered “George Gershwin Alone” in Los Angeles in 1998 and it has remained an audience favorite ever since. In the story, Felder plays the ghost of the jazz-age composer reflecting on his life and work and he performs on the piano several pieces of Gershwin’s music, including “Rhapsody in Blue.”
Felder, 54, said earlier this year he believes he’s getting too old to play Gershwin, who died in his 30s of a brain tumor in 1937: “Do ghosts who left us at the tender age of 38 hobble around the stage like old men?”Saturday’s shows at the Balboa will be your final performances of “George Gershwin Alone” in San Diego.
