A Nottinghamshire hero who received the George Cross after saving his brothers from a raging fire, has died. In 1952, 15-year-old John Bamford GC risked his life and suffered horrific burn injuries while rescuing his two brothers from the fire at their family home in Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire.

After his dad's attempt to push through the flames failed, Jack got down on his hands and knees and crawled through the flames into the bedroom. The teenager pushed through the awful pain, with his shirt completely burned from his back, and managed to free his younger brothers.Jack was fast losing consciousness but he managed to get one leg over the window sill and fell to the ground.
