The DA, ActionSA, Freedom Front Plus (FF+), ACDP, UDM and Cope met on Friday and most parties agreed to endorse Mashaba for the mayoral position in Johannesburg
ActionSA president Herman Mashaba’s bid to make a comeback as the mayor of theCity of Johannesburg received a major boost after most possible coalition partners endorsed him.
His future as mayor is dependent on the DA, which is said to have agreed to reconsider its stance against handing Mashaba the mayoral chains. Mashaba was Johannesburg mayor under the DA from 2016 until 2019, when he resigned from his job and the party over the return of Helen Zille as chairperson of the federal council.
“In Johannesburg the parties will attempt to keep the ANC out and form a minority government. The majority of parties present agreed to support the mayoral candidate of ActionSA. Consensus was thus not yet reached on Johannesburg.“The DA took a principle decision at their federal executive that where they secured the majority of votes among opposition parties, they will put forward their mayoral candidate.
