'We are doing our job by arresting them and putting him in jail but then they are being turned back out to our streets days later.' Police voice concerns over repeat criminals.
Columbus police voice frustration that convicted individuals such as Sagittarius Lamar are going right back out on city streets and continuing to commit crimes. "Here we are again," Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Police Brian Steel said. "It’s a hamster wheel that never stops. You have a violent offender that’s committing crimes. We are doing our job by arresting them and putting him in jail, but then they are being turned back out to our streets days later.
Court documents revealed Lamar has a lengthy criminal past. Before Saturday's shooting, he faced three pending cases that were set for trial at the end of June, two of them for felonies including drug trafficking and improper handling of a gun. WSYX reached out to the office of Franklin County Judge Jeff Brown to inquire why Lamar was let out on bond and is waiting for a reply.WSYX has covered similar incidents over the last year.told police he was cleaning a gun when a bullet shot out, hitting 16-year-old Elisha Judd in the forehead and killed her. Stanley is facing a reckless homicide charge.
Pigram also had a long criminal history, including convictions for serious felonies like robbery, burglary, and drugs. The courts and sheriff's office staff confirmed that Pigram was released from the Franklin County Jail a week prior to the shooting. He had been on probation for a separate case and was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest.
