The Philadelphia Flyers hope long-time television analyst Keith Jones can turn the franchise into a winner now that he's team president of hockey operations.
And that they're former Flyers? So what, Hilferty said. They were the best candidates for their jobs and “it just so happens they’re former Flyers.”
The Flyers hired multiple search firms and interviewed several candidates all to land on a candidate who simply had to surrender his press pass to get the job. Philadelphia is coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history under Tortorella, who led Tampa Bay to a Stanley Cup in 2004, and has missed the playoffs for three straight years. The Flyers haven’t won a Stanley Cup since taking consecutive championships in 1974 and 1975.
As empty seasons piled up, the Flyers continued to lean on former players such as Bobby Clarke, Paul Holmgren and Ron Hextall to jump to the front office and hope what they learned on the ice in the glory days could transfer into a winning culture in the front office. The in-season results were mixed. The postseason play results were not, empty offseasons without a championship.
