The photographer examines the effects of climate change and extensive drilling in the Caspian Sea region, focusing on its impact on the local inhabitants, whose livelihoods rely heavily on water and fishing.

'Amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict, the Caspian Sea is gaining significance for energy and trade. As Baku prepares to host COP29 in November 2024, the world’s largest inland body of water faces a severe crisis. Coastlines have shifted up to 50 km, impacting human and economic activities, including the oil industry.

Today, the water level is so low that one can walk in the sea. Boats struggle to access the open sea from the river and often get bogged down, while fish can’t travel up the river to spawn. Meanwhile, in the suburbs of Atyrau along the road that links Kazakhstan to Russia, the landscape is soaked in water—a flooded desert. Recently, Russia released a significant amount of water into the Ural without concern for the consequences, leading to dramatic flooding in the region.
