Here's why we need a first man:
democratic presidential candidates have male spouses , there’s a real likelihood we will have a “first gentleman,” “first spouse,” “first man” or my personal favorite, “first dude.” Introducing a man to this role would help highlight the ridiculousness of how we treat first ladies and women, in general.
It’s a problem, because this serves as a model of how women should behave. But, would Elizabeth Warren’s spouse, Bruce Mann, a law professor at Harvard also be expected to follow her around? Or would Kamala Harris’ spouse Douglas Emhoff, a litigator and partner at a law firm be asked to choose flowers? Most likely they would not. Chasten Buttigieg would likely face his own set of stereotypes as the spouse of the first openly gay president.
