Investigations by the New York Attorney General and Manhattan DA into the Trump Organization’s financial dealings have been ongoing since 2019.
James said in Tuesday’sher office “has not yet reached a final decision” about whether to bring a lawsuit against Trump or his company, though Perry noted the investigation “appears to be in its final stages” and the testimony the AG’s seeking now suggests the evidence-gathering is nearing an end.
James’ office is undertaking both a civil and criminal probe—the civil one requires a lower burden of proof—and her or the Manhattan DA’s criminal investigations could result in charges against Trump, his associates or the company, while a civil investigation can only result in a lawsuit. That litigation could pose an “existential threat to the Trump Organization,” Perry noted, with potential consequences ranging from monetary damages to the court taking away the company’s business certificate.
