Those who claim that only 9,000 people have died from COVID are wrong -- WebMD Chief Medical Officer drjohnwhyte talked to MensHealthMag to set the record straight:
Anthony Fauci, M.D., Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, has attempted to clear up the confusion in recent interviews.
"The numbers that you've been hearing—the 180,000 plus deaths—are real deaths from COVID-19," Dr. Fauci said on."Let there not be any confusion about that. It's not 9,000 deaths from COVID-19. It's 180,000-plus deaths." Most people develop at least one or two health conditions—such as hypertension or obesity— as they age, he tells. The majority of COVID deaths are in older people, so it's not surprising they had underlying conditions, he says.
Dr. Whyte believes miscommunication and our collective desire for normalcy make these conspiracies appealing. If COVID-19 weren't a threat, then there's no reason to stick with public health measures, likeand physical distancing. But coronavirus is not a hoax, and these actions remain our best defense against the disease.
