A handful of cities, states and countries are showing signs that the number of infections may have peaked or are close to
that the state will reach its peak of new infections before the end of the month.
The seven-day average of new cases in New York City has plateaued over the last two weeks: it was at 36,560 on Tuesday, slightly down from 39,666 January 2, according to the CDC. New Jersey seems to have plateaued as well: On Tuesday the seven-day average of new cases was 31,098, slightly up from 30,912 January 5, according to the CDC. 797,216. That’s the number of new cases reported in the U.S. Tuesday, according to the CDC, down from a record 1.35 million Monday.
