The first freeze of the fall will likely occur in the Panhandle later this month, but much of Texas will have to wait a few more weeks.
Even though it’s October and much of the state is still dealing with 90-degree temperatures on a consistent basis, colder weather is not far away. Parts of the state could see their first freeze by the end of this month, and many other areas will see their temperatures plummet during November. Depending on where you live across the Lone Star State, the day of the first freeze can vary by several weeks.
This is because as cold fronts move south, away from where they originated, they often weaken or stall out. This part of Texas needs especially strong cold fronts to experience their first freeze. Austin: Nov. 29 San Antonio: Nov. 30 Laredo: Dec. 12 It should be noted that the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio, does normally experience a significantly earlier first freeze because of its higher elevation from sea level as well as slightly drier air.
