Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro Tuesday, revealing some impressive boosts to the console’s hardware that should translate into better-looking and performing games.
The system will allow for PS5 Pro Enhanced games that will look significantly better at high fidelity with framerates up to 120fps. Games will play better and look better than they do on a standard PS5. The only problem? The new system is priced at $700 and that’s for a digital-only console. Adding a disc-drive will set you back another $80 and if you want a vertical stand, you’ll shell out another $30. That’s over $800 USD for a new system that includes:: A GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
Pre-orders for the updated system will go live on September 26th via PlayStation Direct and participating retailers. While those have not been named just yet, they’re likely to include Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and GameStop as well as lesser known retailers like AntOnline as well as international chains. The console itself releases on November 7th, 2024.
Despite general grumbling and backlash within the PlayStation community at the outrageous price-tag, it seems a foregone conclusion that these will fly off the shelves this holiday season. When the PS5 first launched it was selling for ridiculous prices as third-party sellers bought up all the stock and resold it on eBay and elsewhere well above MSRP.
