Some San Antonio neighborhoods are about to get a new City Council representative. Here’s what you need to know
Frank Fonseca showed up to multiple San Antonio redistricting meetings on a mission: keep his Maverick area neighbors in City Council District 7 on the Northwest Side. He spoke passionately about how his neighborhood had been shuffled among districts for decades, having to build new relationships with each move.Maverick, just south of Balcones Heights and west of Fredericksburg Road, is slated to be represented by City Council District 1, changing hands for at least the third decade in a row.
When San Antonio embarked on redistricting last fall, the committee’s charge was clear: fast-growing districts 6, 8 and 9 would have to shed residents while District 5, with the smallest population, would have to gain people. On ExpressNews.com:The committee struggled to grow District 1’s population without jeopardizing its majority Hispanic strength. To comply with the federal Voting Rights Act, new districts can’t dilute the voting power of certain racial or ethnic communities.
District 6 appointees made a last effort proposal that still would have divided Los Jardines but returned Cuellar Park and most of Old Highway 90 back to District 6, where those areas have been for decades. Those who voted in the minority to adopt the new District 6 plan said their opinion had changed after hearing a flood of comments from residents asking to remain in far West Side District 6.
