Here’s what we can learn from watching Adele Lim walk away from the pay gap:

According to an, negotiations between Warner Brothers and the creative team including Lim broke down when it came to light that Lim was offered $110,000 to come back as a writer for a sequel movie. Her colleague Peter Chiarelli was offered $800,000 to $1 million to return. Lim, who was also working on projects with Disney, walked away. Warner Brothers reached out months later with a different offer, and Chiarelli even offered to share some of his fee with Lim.

First, I looked at the top fifteen romantic comedies produced by Warner Brothers. Based on return on investment, Crazy Rich Asians has the all time top ROI of 6.95. The next two successful films, have an ROI of 5.39 and 3.16, respectively. The other films drop lower down the list towards an ROI of zero. Confirming Chun’s assessment,Sex and the Cityis also a standout when looking at romantic comedies produced across all major studios.

So what can be learned from this situation? From a strategic point of view, there are three questions executives need to ask themselves in order to maximize their success in any negotiation. They include:Can we get parties back to the negotiation if talks stall or fail? Are we defining a fair and accurate bargaining range?
