As the clock approached midnight Sunday, people were heading to Walmart to buy bottled water and Houston ISD officials announced classes would be canceled on Monday. Aldine ISD officials later joined them. Fort Bend school officials classes would go on. Here's what we know, and what we don't, about the situation, which affects 2.2 million customers of the Houston water system.The boil water notice is a precaution for the city's 2.2 million-plus residents, the city said — there is no evidence the city's water has been contaminated — and will be in place until at least Tuesday, when the city expects to begin receiving results from water samples it plans to submit for testing Monday morning.
"We are optimistic because it was a minute — less — drop in water pressure, that hopefully there won’t be any bacteria," Jones said. Because pressure dipped below the required 20 pounds per square inch for any amount of time, the city was legally obligated to inform the public, she said.We don't know, as the cause of the power outage remains under investigation. The plant has backup power generators to help maintain water pressure in the event of an emergency, but they are not set to work automatically, Jones said.
