As Chicago and Illinois’ COVID-19 metrics plummet from their all-time peaks just weeks ago, the doctor leading America’s war against the virus sees signs for hope.

On the mask requirement in Illinois schools - at the center of a protracted legal battle - Fauci said the statewide mandate, combined with vaccinations, are part of a layered approach that’s keeping schools open.

"So before we start talking about pulling back on them, let's get the dynamic of the virus in the community low enough so that we can feel safe in pulling back on the requirement for children to wear masks," he added. "She has extraordinarily good judgment - and I talk to her very frequently - and if she makes that decision I have total confidence that that’s the right decision," Fauci said.
