SAN ANTONIO — In February, longtime San Antonio Missions owner David Elmore and Elmore Sports Group approached Bruce Hill about the baseball team.
So Elmore asked whether Hill, a real estate and mineral rights investor, was interested in putting a group together to acquire the Double-A team and make the requirements. He was.He set about assembling a mix of prominent developers, members of the city’s Latino business and political elite, and beloved Spurs stars. They broke weeks of silence on the deal this week to officially announce the sale and identify the new owners.
At a news conference Thursday morning at Wolff Stadium, Hill and other investors said they want “to keep baseball in San Antonio for generations to come” and provide affordable entertainment for families. “This footprint really does not enable us to ever fully meet those requirements without a major renovation,” Ryan said. “We’re going to work on that right now.”“It’s a distinct possibility,” Hill said Thursday. “It’s more about successful baseball than it is Double-A or Triple-A to me. Things will take care of themselves.”
One of the potential sites for a downtown ballpark is the 2.3-acre former Fox Tech High School baseball field, which Weston Urban is set to acquire from the San Antonio Independent School District. In exchange, the district will receive 2.2 acres that Weston Urban owns next to the field, which is close to the city’s San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
