Although more Americans question the value of a college degree, a new study shows that Ohio's public universities have a big impact on state’s economy

In a time where more Americans are questioning the value of higher education and a college degree, a new study shows that Ohio's public universities are definitely good for one thing: helping the economy.in the last fiscal year, according to a study by Lightcast, an independent consulting firm, on behalf of the Inter-University Council of Ohio.

The Lightcast study measured economic impact based on a number of variables, including expenditures on goods and services for operations and construction; spending by students and visitors; revenue from startup and spin-off companies; as well as research and clinical activities.Construction spending impact: $598 millionStart-up and spin-off company impact: $1.7 billionVolunteerism impact : $79.3 millionThe largest return on investment came from alumni.

The percent of Americans who think a degree from a public university is worth the cost, though, has remained fairly consistent over the past five years. About 66% of people last year agreed that public universities are worth the cost.
