The New Year is bringing in a new expense for many Bay Area commuters, with a $1 toll hike to cross most local bridges starting Saturday.
, which is meant to generate $4.45 billion over 25 years for high-priority transit projects, like the BART extension through downtown San Jose and expanded ferry service. As gas prices remain sky-high, many commuters are greeting the new price tag with less holiday cheer. With the new fare hike, the fee to cross Bay Area bridges has jumped more than 130% since 2004 when it was $3.00, outpacing the rise in gasoline prices and BART fares over the same period.
