Pilots and airlines reported nearly 450 wildlife strikes at Dallas Love Field and DFW Airport in 2022.
at the time recommended all airports take a harder look at their wildlife strike plans.
DFW ranked fourth in the nation for bird strikes in 2022, according to the FAA, behind Denver, Chicago O’Hare at Hartsfield-Jackson and Atlanta International Airport. The FAA keeps a database going back to 1990 with each reported collision between aircraft and wildlife. The reporting is voluntary, given by pilots, airlines, aircraft maintenance personnel, air traffic control personnel or engine manufacturers.
Isaac Ellison, environmental supervisor at the city’s department of aviation, said Dallas Love Field experienced a high number of strikes in 2017 and 2018 due to pigeons feeding on vegetation that the airport was able to identify and mitigate in the airfield. Since then, he said, the strikes have decreased.
“Supposedly, birds can never develop a tolerance to it,” Ellison said in an email. “It has worked wonders for us! Our native bird populations have significantly decreased and so have our strike numbers.”
