You can potentially save a boatload of cash during your retirement without a budget cut.

I’ve mentioned before that healthcare costs for the average American couple retiring at 65 will be enormous: An estimated $315,000 over the rest of their lives, according to Fidelity Investments, the Boston-based asset-management giant. That’s $315,00 beyond what Medicare will pay for.

This goes beyond the standard advice from doctors that, say, walking 20 minutes a few times a week is sufficient to maintain decent health as we age. Don’t get me wrong, walking is always good advice. But the NIH-AARP study attempted to go further. But how to measure “moderate” and “vigorous?” After all, the same general activity can fall into either category, depending on the level of exertion. A leisurely bike ride, for example, has a MET Score of about 3.5, while competitive mountain biking may have a MET of about 16. Obviously, the higher MET the better.

Separately, WebMD notes that other forms of common exercise, like brisk walking and low-impact aerobics, promote better health but have lower MET scores. This means you get less bang for your buck, so to speak, than more vigorous activities like running, swimming or racket sports. And if the only exercise you get is walking the dog, it’s not enough: Its estimated MET score is just 3.5.
