Who are the top central Ohio boys wrestling teams heading into the 2022-23 season?
– The Shamrocks don’t have three-time state champion and 2022 graduate Seth Shumate to lean on after winning the district title and finishing third at state in Division I, but plenty of depth returns. Junior Omar Ayoub won the state title at 126 pounds last season, junior Ethan Birden was state runner-up at 144 and senior Rahul Raghuram and junior Joey Baumann were state qualifiers at 113 and 120, respectively.
– With three returning state qualifiers, the Vikings again should be one of central Ohio’s top Division I teams after finishing fourth at district last winter. Teays Valley features senior Camden McDanel, who was state runner-up at 182 in 2021 and at 190 last season. Also at state last season, senior Gunnar Havens placed fifth at 106 and senior Joey Thurston went 1-2 at heavyweight as the Vikings finished ninth. Freshman Joshua Zimmer also could make an impact.
