Get ready for a spectacle as RAF plans a flypast for Hercules' retirement! 🛫
On Wednesday, 14 June, the Royal Air Force will commemorate the upcoming retirement of the Hercules with a flypast spanning all four nations of the United Kingdom.
This aerial event will highlight locations significant to the Hercules' service and 47 Squadron. The flypast involves three aircraft, the routes and timings of which are detailed below. The Hercules journey began in December 1966 at Marshall’s of Cambridge. Since its induction into RAF service, initially with the 242 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Thorney Island, the Hercules has been an essential asset in UK military and humanitarian relief operations worldwide.
Currently, the transition to the 22-strong Atlas fleet and other air mobility aircraft is well underway. Yet, the Hercules and 47 Squadron will continue supporting UK defence objectives until 30 June 2023. The extensive experience and wide-ranging capabilities acquired from operating the Hercules will transition to other flying platforms in RAF service. This includes Ground support staff , who will shift to similar roles within the RAF.
