Hello Kitty turns 50 this summer and she has legions of online fans and collaborations with the biggest brands in fashion and beauty. How did she do it?
“Wait—what’s a Hello Kitty rave?” These are words I never imagined saying, but as I sit cross legged on a beanbag chair in my daughters’ playroom on a call with Los Angeles-based digital creator Sophia Torres, it takes less than five minutes for the question to come up. Torres trades in all things cute. Her wardrobe is filled with twirly ballerina skirts and bow-bedecked headbands and her bedroom has an entire section dedicated to collectables from Japanese entertainment company Sanrio.
” Conceptualized in 1974 as decoration for a vinyl coin purse, Hello Kitty comes with a lengthy bit of lore. Despite her kitten-like appearance, Sanrio has gone on the record saying the character is actually an anthropomorphized little girl named Kitty White from the suburbs of England with a twin sister called Mimmy. She’s “five apples” tall and is romantically pursued by another humanoid feline named Dear Daniel.
