Two puppies from the Helen Woodward Animal Center, Callen and Petunia, are competing in Discovery Channel's Puppy Bowl XXI to raise money and awareness for animal shelters nationwide. The three-hour program airs on TV before the Super Bowl and raises money for pets at animal shelters nationwide, such as the nonprofit Helen Woodward Animal Center based in Rancho Santa Fe. The program showcases the sports prowess and other talents of rescue pets living at animal shelters and highlights the need to adopt pets. Viewers get to go behind-the-scenes at the Puppy Bowl through interviews with coaches and players. A Puppy Bowl XX Watch Party is from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at McGregor’s Bar and Grill, 10475 San Diego Mission Road. The 21st annual Puppy Bowl features two teams of puppies, Team Ruff, wearing orange bandanas and Team Fluff, wearing blue. Callen, a dachshund blend, who was adopted from the Helen Woodward Animal Center, is one of the pups competing in this year’s Puppy Bowl to raise money and awareness for animal shelters. Two pups, Callen, a Dachshund blend, and Petunia, a terrier blend, both from Helen Woodward Animal Center, will be among the featured pups and will compete for the title of Most Valuable Puppy. Each team has won the Puppy Bowl five times since Animal Planet and Discovery introduced the two teams in Puppy Bowl XI. This year, Team Ruff is the defending champion; they took home the “Lombarky” trophy in 2024’s Puppy Bowl XX. The game airs at 11 a.m. This year, attendees can also join a cornhole competition for prizes. The event will be held on the dog-friendly patio and will offer canine-themed menu items, including a special dish for attending pooches, which will include some pups from Helen Woodward. Ten percent of food and drink sales at the event will go to Helen Woodward Animal Center. The Puppy Bowl, one of the longest running call-to-adoption television events, will e-simulcast across Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, truTV, Max, and discovery+.
