In both the show and the film, Harry is a spy leading a double life and lying to his family about being a computer salesman, but through various events, Helen discovers the truth of Harry’s profession, leading to the two becoming closer.
True Lies Balances Keeping Surveillance On Dana & Invading Her Privacy This shift of having both parents elect to spy on their daughter instead of one partner on the other helps balance the unsettling concept of a family spying on each other. This is partly because two parents feeling protective of their daughter as she comes of age raises more palatable stakes than presenting a family at risk of dissolving due to infidelity.
The series also balances its surveillance with privacy by portraying the updated Helen and Harry as having a modicum of respect for Dana’s autonomy. After all, they surveil her, but they do not automatically watch the footage of their daughter at the party, despite their obvious interest. This gives Dana more privacy than the 1994 True Lies awards Helen.
