Bulldogs get the win on a 36-yard touchdown pass to complete rally
Heights receiver Kevon Misher catches a pass from Allen Rainey and gets past Stratford defensive back Brecken Menuet to score the game winning touchdown in a Region III-6A Division II bi-district game high school football game between Heights and Stratford Saturday, Nov 12, 2022, in Houston. Heights defeats Stratford 25-20.Heights coach Stephen Dixon couldn’t contain his emotions after this one — and everyone earned a hug.
Antwone McDonald later blocked a punt, setting up a short field for RB Javi Denson to notch a four-yard TD run for a 17-6 lead in the second quarter. K Giancarlo Chelala hit two field goals in the first half, and P Jake Brand pinned Heights at its 1 early in the second quarter with a wind- and roll-aided 70-yard punt.
And after a scoreless third, the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the fourth. DB Jared Sutton’s 56-yard interception return – the only turnover of the game – set up Misher’s 12-yard TD grab. But Stratford again blocked the extra point to preserve a 20-19 lead. Then Rainey led a 99-yard scoring drive in the final 2:45 that culminated with Misher’s go-ahead TD.
Heights amassed 417 total yards and 20 first downs. Stratford had 403 yards and 16 first downs – but didn’t score in the second half.Heights , which finished second in 18-6A, won a bi-district championship for the second time in three years. It defeated Cypress Creek 39-21 two years ago before falling to Katy Taylor in the area playoffs.
District champ Lamar also won against 17-6A’s representative, beating Jersey Village 55-24 on Friday.“A lot of people aren’t really on , as far as recruiting goes, but there’s a certain 6-4, 6-5 quarterback from HISD who he resembles — Vince Young,” Dixon said. “Now, he’s not Vince Young, but he’s not far off, and he’s a great kid and a great leader, so these colleges better jump on him pretty quick.
