Melbourne’s Lord Mayor has called for tougher penalties for graffiti vandals after the clock tower atop Melbourne’s iconic Flinders Street Station was defaced.

The north-facing clock of the tower at the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders Streets was sprayed with black and red tags, while a white birdlike design was plastered either side of the clock face. Newly sworn in Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece said every Melbournian “should feel outraged” by the defacing of Flinders Street station, describing the act as the “height of idiocy”.
