Secretary Pete Hegseth of the Department of Defense testifies during a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. Secretary Pete Hegseth of the Department of Defense indicated Thursday the U.
S. has contingency plans for taking over Greenland and Panama. He told Ranking Member Adam Smith, D-Wash., of the House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services during a hearing that assuming control of the countries is one contingency the DOD has planned for. The congressman had told Hegseth he has issues with using the U.S. military to conquer Greenland and Panama. “Our job at the DOD is to have plans, and we have a lot of them,” Hegseth said, leading Smith to ask whether the department has a plan to take over the countries. “Our job at the defense department is to plans for any particular contingency,” the secretary answered. Smith then asked whether those contingencies include “basically invading Denmark,” whose kingdom includes Greenland. “Any contingency you need, we’ve got it,” Hegseth replied. “We’ve got a building full of planners, and we’re prepared to give recommendations whenever needed.” The ranking member asked the secretary to clarify whether the U.S. has plans to conquer Greenland and Panama, to which Hegseth responded, “I think the American people would want the Pentagon to have plans for any particular contingency, and thankfully, we are in the planning business.” Smith yielded his time, concluding, “Speaking on behalf of the American people, I don’t think the American people voted for President Trump because they were hoping we would invade Greenland.”Later in the hearing, Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, told Hegseth he wanted to help him out since “people try to, you know, twist your words.” Rep. Turner asked the secretary whether he confirmed at the hearing the DOD has plans for conquering or invading Greenland. “All my testimony is is that the Pentagon has plans for any number of contingencies,” Hegseth replied. “It is not your testimony today that there are plans at the Pentagon for taking by force or invading Greenland, correct?” Rep. Turner asked again, raising his voice. “Because I sure as hell hope that-that it is not your testimony.” Hegseth responded that “we look forward to working with Greenland to ensure that it is secured from any potential threats.”the DOD was ready to move Greenland defense and civil support operations from the responsibility of U.S. European Command to U.S. Northern Command. The move would more closely align Greenland with the U.S., the news outlet explained.
