A major winter storm is causing hazardous travel conditions across the eastern US with heavy snow and ice. Millions are under winter weather alerts, with some areas facing potential disruptions to daily life.
A powerful winter storm is moving east from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic today, bringing heavy to moderate snow across eastern states and making travel hazardous. Almost 60 million people are under winter weather alerts. The National Weather Service warns of substantial disruptions to daily life. Some areas in the Central Plains could see up to 15 inches of snow, the most in a decade or more, making roads impassable.
Eastern seaboard cities including Washington could receive 6 to 12 inches of snow, impacting commuters. 2 to 4 inches are expected across parts of the Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians. Ice and freezing rain will develop over parts of the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic, ending this evening over the Mid-Atlantic. Dangerous travel conditions are expected to develop. While the Central Plains and Mid-Atlantic face snow and ice, the South-East could experience strong to severe thunderstorms today. The National Weather Service warns of a 1 in 5 risk of severe thunderstorms through Tuesday morning, bringing frequent lightning, severe wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes. Washington could see up to an inch of snow per hour this morning, with travel conditions deteriorating rapidly. The National Weather Service office for Washington-Baltimore said that during the heaviest snow, between midnight and mid-morning, even primary and treated roads will be impassible.
