A massive snowstorm descended upon Washington state on Sunday, leading to hazardous road conditions and widespread travel disruptions. The heaviest snowfall was reported in Whatcom County, where roads were rendered impassable by a combination of ice and snow. The south Sound region also experienced snow showers, creating treacherous driving conditions. Authorities issued warnings and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Heavy snowfall blanketed parts of Washington state on Sunday, causing hazardous driving conditions and prompting authorities to issue warnings. Viewers in Custer and Birch Bay reported some of the heaviest snow they had ever witnessed. Pierce Transit was forced to operate on snow routes due to the treacherous roads, and multiple crashes marred the morning commute throughout the region.

On northbound Interstate 5 just south of State Route 529 in Marysville, a crash blocked two lanes, slowing traffic significantly. Before 6 a.m., a tree fell onto State Route 18 near the Raging River, but a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) plow successfully cleared the obstruction.Whatcom County experienced some of the most challenging conditions, with roads covered in a mixture of ice and approximately 6 inches of snow. Authorities urged residents to stay off the roads if possible. The south Sound region, including Tacoma, Olympia, and Puyallup, also faced scattered snow showers throughout the day, creating additional slippery sections. A cold wind further compounded the hazardous conditions. Woodinville, Enumclaw, the San Juan Islands, Forks, and La Push were under a cold weather advisory due to wind chills plummeting into the teens. Bellingham faced even more biting cold, with wind chills dropping into the single digits. The cold weather advisory remained in effect through Wednesday. Additional snow posed a lingering risk of slippery roads through Tuesday morning, prompting a winter weather advisory for areas near coastal beaches and the Strait of Juan De Fuca. A few lingering snow flurries may briefly return later this week, but it may be 10 days or more before temperatures rise significantly
