Alabama is bracing for a week of persistent rainfall, with the potential for 4 to 6 inches of accumulation in some areas. The heavy downpour raises concerns about flooding, especially in north and central Alabama.
A significant amount of rain is predicted to fall across Alabama in intervals throughout the week. The National Weather Service anticipates that the northern portion of the state could accumulate 4 to 6 inches of rainfall by the end of the week. This rainfall is expected to be accompanied by multiple waves of rain, with some periods potentially heavy, particularly from Tuesday to Thursday. Areas in north Alabama and the northern part of central Alabama can anticipate 1 to 4 inches of rainfall.
While south Alabama will also receive rainfall, the amounts are projected to be less substantial. The weather service has issued warnings of potential minor river flooding and isolated flash flooding in urban areas of north and central Alabama throughout the week. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has designated a substantial portion of Alabama as being at a Level 2 out of 4 risk for flash flooding on both Tuesday and Wednesday. These areas are highlighted in yellow on the forecast maps. Notably, forecasters are still assessing the precise locations where the heaviest rainfall will occur and the corresponding flood risk levels. Despite the anticipated rainfall, Alabama continues to face drought conditions. Large parts of the state remain in Level 2 and 1 drought stages, with additional areas abnormally dry or on the verge of drought. The weather service suggests that the rainfall may not completely alleviate the drought situation. Forecasters are monitoring the possibility of additional heavy rainfall this weekend, from Saturday into Sunday.
