A powerful atmospheric river brought heavy rain to Northern California, leading to widespread flooding, road closures, and chain controls. The storm impacted major highways and caused hazardous travel conditions.
Significant wet weather impacted Northern California on Wednesday morning, causing chain controls, interstate closures, and flooded roads. Heavy rain, driven by an atmospheric river, pounded the region throughout Tuesday night, leading to a Flood Advisory for Sacramento, Solano, Yolo, and Placer counties until 3 a.m. Wednesday. Much of San Joaquin County and parts of Stanislaus County remained under a flood watch late Tuesday night.
A wind advisory was also in effect for the Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley, with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph.Flooding was reported in various locations throughout Sacramento County, prompting road closures. Kiefer Boulevard in Sloughhouse was shut down from Jackson Road to the Kiefer landfill due to afternoon flooding. In Rancho Murieta, Deer Creek overflowed onto Scott Road, forcing its closure between Boys Ranch and Latrobe roads. The California Highway Patrol's (CHP) South Sacramento division reported flooding in the number 1 lane of southbound Interstate 5 south of Sutterville Road and in the number 1 lane of northbound Highway 99 at Broadway. Further south in San Joaquin County, both southbound Interstate 5 and southbound Highway 99 were closed Tuesday night due to major flooding. I-5's multi-lane closure occurred at Benjamin Holt Drive in Stockton, while Highway 99 was fully closed near Turner Road in the Lodi area. In Placer County, Placer Road in the Sheridan area was closed between Riosa and Brewer roads. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported flooding along Pitt School Road near Interstate 80 in Solano County. A large tree fell and took power lines down along Auburn Folsom Road in Auburn, Placer County. The CHP Auburn reported a driver colliding with the fallen tree but sustaining no injuries. Auburn Folsom Road was closed in both directions near Powerhouse Road. In the high country, a Winter Storm Warning was in effect from Monday through Wednesday, discouraging mountain travel. As of Wednesday morning, chain controls were still in effect on Interstate 80 between Kingvale and Truckee. Multiple crashes and snow prompted closures of I-80 eastbound from Nyack to Truckee. Westbound I-80 traffic was also closed from the Nevada State Line to west of Kingvale due to snow. However, by just after 7 a.m., the CHP announced the reopening of both directions of I-80. Highway 50 also had chain controls from Twin Bridges to Meyers as of early Wednesday morning. Updated road conditions can be found online from Caltrans
