Israel launched over 20 airstrikes early Saturday morning on a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, targeting areas where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is believed to reside. The strikes, which lasted for five hours, are considered the most powerful attacks on Beirut since the start of the war nearly a year ago.

on a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital in an apparent attempt to kill Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah , a key ally of Iran.

Israel has not said whether it tried to hit Nasrallah, but a senior Israeli official said top Hezbollah commanders were targeted.“I think it’s too early to say … Sometimes they hide the fact when we succeed,” the Israeli official told reporters when asked if the strike on Friday had killed Nasrallah.

“I felt like the building was going to collapse on top of me,” said Abir Hammoud, a teacher in her 40s.Early on Saturday Lebanon’s health ministry said hospitals in Beirut’s southern suburbs would be evacuated after heavy Israeli strikes in the area, urging hospitals in unaffected areas to stop admitting non-urgent cases. The health ministry has yet to provide an updated toll for strikes.

Although some Israeli media suggested that the US had been informed minutes before the attack, that was emphatically denied by the US president, Joe Biden, who told reporters the US had “no knowledge of or participation” in the strike.
